Healthy Cleaning Supplies

So many of today’s cleaning products have chemicals in them that are harmful to inhale, swallow and some you have to avoid skin contact with. About 95% of all cleaning products can make children and pets sick if consumed. Some cannot be mixed due to the harmful fumes they create and others that are supposed to make your house smell pleasant can release chemicals when heated or sprayed. A few even leave behind a film that may cause skin irritation or  make small children and pets sick.

Let’s start with my favorite all natural cleaner, vinegar. Vinegar can be used to clean all surfaces from the vent hood down to the floors and if you are worried about really dirty areas like toilet bowls, door knobs, kids toys, and certain kitchen areas you can go over it with a hydrogen peroxide spray in a bottle. Between the two products, your surfaces will be clean and sanitized. Currently, several popular floor products can make pets very sick if they come into contact with them.  Your kids and pets can come into contact with vinegar and hydrogen peroxide wet or dry.

Another popular product in homes with children and pets are spray and warmers to help cover or get rid of bad smells.  Both the sprays and wax contain ingredients that are not healthy to inhale. I have yet to find a healthy spray that does not leave oil stains on furniture, floors, and other surfaces but I have found a great alternative to wax.  A few tablespoons of coconut oil mixed with your favorite essential oil or spices like cinnamon, allspice or  pumpkin spice.  You can create a unique custom smell and know that no harmful chemicals are being released in your home.

My last alternative suggestion is for clogged drains. All current chemical brands have scary warning labels and can burn skin with direct contact. My all natural solution is baking soda poured down the drain and then add vinegar. Let it soak about 10-15 minutes and flush with hot water. If the drain is still having issues get a designated sink and tub plunger and use those muscles.  I would say this combination is successful 9 times out of ten.

As always please let me know how these suggestions worked for you in your household.
