Homemade Baby food is easier than I thought!

Right before my youngest son was ready for solid foods Eric and I were looking at the ingredients on several jars and were amazed at the list.  Some had just the food listed and others had food and words we could not even pronounce. I remember feeding my oldest two baby food and how horrible they smelled. So after a few days of discussing the idea Eric and I decided to go the homemade route.

The only product we had to purchase was a food grinder. We already had assorted pot sizes, steamer baskets, and ice trays. We spent one day cooking organic fruits and vegetables, filling ice trays, freezing and then filling individual freezer bags that were marked with food content and the date it was packaged (recommended use is within one month but can be safely frozen for up to three months). At the end of the day we had made a months supply of food for the amazing price of $10-$12.

Each organic vegetable and fruit had its own cook time but we choose to steam to preserve the most vitamins and nutrients. Around 10-15 minutes of steaming they would simply cool for about ten minutes and then straight to the grinder where we added the same steam water (certain organic vegetables like spinach, potatoes, carrots, etc. need separate boiled water to mix due to the naturally occurring niacin) to create the consistency we wanted in the food.  After it was blended we simply filled ice trays (each cube is one ounce and a perfect serving size) and filled marked bags when frozen.

The first two foods we gave Jules was apples and sweet peas. Both were a success! Peas are the only vegetable I  do not eat but they sure smelled far better homemade than out of a jar!
