A Normal Static Work Day From Home

I’ve been asked over the years what my normal work day looks like. This can change day to day as an independent contractor and also depends if I am static or nomadic.

  • Static refers to working from my home base or designated office location.
  • Nomadic refers to working from different locations or while traveling.

I’ve done a lot of nomadic work on a laptop over the years and plan to do more, however, this blog post is just going to cover my static work day. I’ll write another blog post about my nomadic daily routine later, so stay tuned for that.

In a normal static work day from home, my routine looks like this:

  • My smartphone alarm goes off and I hit the 10-minute snooze button at least 2 or 3 times.
  • Off to the bathroom, I go for my morning cleanup and, well, you know.
  • It’s to the kitchen now, where I heat up some water for instant coffee gratification.
  • Now back to the bedroom, where I power up the laptop.

Let’s take a short intermission break here from the routine list so I can point out that I do sometimes make a bagel with cream cheese or possibly another quick breakfast treat to go with the coffee. Though, it seems that more often than not, I end up with just a cup of coffee till I take a lunch break. Ok, back to the list…

  • I now log into my chat software’s so everyone knows I am online.
  • I then check on my daily administrative duties followed by moderation duties.
  • It’s email time! This is where I check all my emails and reply to everything needing my attention.
  • Next, I check on my tasks lists, where I have charted out other things that need to be done this week/month.
  • After completing a percentage of the task list, I then move on to social media. It seems that some social platforms have just as much spam (If not more) than forums, requiring clean-up.
  • Now I do a spot check of administration, moderation, and email again to ensure there’s nothing that needs my immediate attention yet.
  • Time to research a few domains and decide if i want to invest in them to develop or not. I’ll also do some domain appraisals around this time (If applicable).
  • Break Time! By break time, I mean that it’s time to make a quick lunch, run a few necessary errands, and do some chores around the house. Thankfully, my wife is in the same line of work as me and can fill in a bit while I’m taking a break (Unless of course, our son refuses to let her work. It happens)
  • Ok, back to work, chop chop! Time to spot check administration, moderation, and email again to get caught up.
  • Doing another percentage of the tasks list.
  • Wow, I’m caught up for a few minutes. Now it’s time to focus on a few of my personal projects to open up new revenue streams or simply to update personal projects so they stay current (Like posting this blog article right now). I’ll also work on client design projects during this time.
  • Another break! Yay! It might be movie time with the wife and son, or maybe we’ll go for a walk. Shopping happens during this time as well.
  • Let’s not forget about dinner. Off to the kitchen, I go to make my family a meal. Sometimes I end up in front of the grill outside. Ahh, the fresh air is nice!
  • Back to work, I go (Cracking the whip). Time to spot check administration, moderation, and email again to get caught up.
  • Doing another percentage of the tasks list.

Quick intermission break again from the routine list. Looks brain numbing and repetitive doesn’t it? You get used to it after a while. I must add that there are times between breaks where I must attend to my son, who requires attention constantly. The wife and I trade off throughout the day to make it easier on both of us. Ok, back to the list we go…

  • Looks like I’m caught up for the most part. Time to conduct research and browse the interwebs for recent news and other exciting adventurous things the wife and I may want to do some day. I’ll also work on client design projects during this time.
  • Maybe some more updates on personal projects.
  • Now, time to spot check administration, moderation, and email again to get caught up.
  • Time to research a few more domains and decide if i want to invest in them to develop or not. I’ll also do some domain appraisals around this time (If applicable). I’ll also work on client design projects during this time.
  • Uh oh, I almost forgot what time it was! I generally log-off here to take a shower and slip into my pajamas. Unless of course, it’s one of those days I was still in my pajamas and never left the house (It happens).
  • Time for some TV shows or a movie with the wife and son. That is unless she decides to jump back on the pc to do some work. Then it’s playtime with my son till she’s ready.

The above pretty much sums up the general daily routine for me. It varies from time to time of course.
